Save $$ at ethnic grocery stores

Everyone seems to be trimming back these days. In trying to eat healthier meals loaded with whole grains and lots of fresh produce, the grocery store can be friend or foe. A few years ago I discovered that ethnic grocery stores offer the same selections (plus a few more exotic ones) for a MUCH lower price. I have found meyer lemons (usually $1 each at grocery store, if you can find them) for 10 for a $1. Apples consistantly 69cents a pound, even the premium varieties like honey crisp and Fuji. Mushrooms around $1/pound...and not just button, but oyster, crimini, portabellas.... Most of these markets also have bulk food areas, this is where I stock up on basmati rice 49cents a pound, beans 39cents a pound, lentils, flours, salt, sugar, dried herbs and spices. The prices and quality cannot be beat, since the products are replenished so often.
We have also started buying some of our meats at hispanic meat markets (carniceria), The same cuts you would find surrounded in plastic and foam packaging at mass grocery stores can be found here in a butcher's case, fresh, for about 30-50% less, and without all the wasted packaging. Grass Fed local ribeye steaks for $4.49lb cannot be beat for special occasions. 90% lean beef for $1.99 pound....whole chickens, fresh not frozen 79cents a pound. One of the perks of shopping here, is you can buy the bones, very cheap and great for roasting and making homemade stock ready for the freezer. So hunt out your ethnic stores, give it a shop...and let me know about your favorites!

lovely day

Well, I could complain, about the economy about sickness going around our house, about never enough time to get it all done, but I am pretty good, inspite of it all. Take a good look, it could always be much worse....Have a lovely day too y'all....
